Minister calls for more NGOs to help in protecting the environment

Minister of Environment Energy and Water Ahmed Abdullah has called for more NGOs to join in the task of protecting the environment. The minister said environment challenges and threats of climate change are continuing to escalate everyday affecting the whole world particularly small island countries like Maldives. Therefore the urgency of finding solutions for these problems has never been felt so seriously.

The minister was speaking at the official meeting in Baa Eydhafushi today to mark the World Environment Day. President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who has taken leadership in the international efforts to combat global warming and climate change was chief guest of the meeting.

President Gayoom addressed the meeting and gave Green Leaf awards to recipients for outstanding services.

Minister Ahmed Abdullah said Maldives must show example and result in their efforts to protect environment .The Minister commended the important role of NGOs in this great task and called for more NGOs to join. He also thanked all the recipients of Green Leaf award and invited Green Leaf awardees to form a Green Leaf club through which they can enhance their partnership and contribution to the environment in a more holistic and sustained manner.

Minister calls to give maximum protection and care for the reefs

Minister of Environment Energy and Water Ahmed Abdullah has called to give maximum protection and care to the reefs of the country for the protection of the islands and for sustainable fishery and tourism development. Abdullah said this in his World Environment Day message published today. Describing reefs as the life of islands, he said Maldives is blessed with one of the most beautiful and unique reef ecosystems and it is a duty of everyone to dedicate his total commitment and care to reefs of the country. He also said that more commitment and attention to reefs is needed today than ever before in the face of mounting challenges and threats. This year being International Year of Reefs, requires more sustained efforts towards this task, he said.

Environment Minister touched upon the dire need of harnessing available resources for the development of sustainable energy and encouraged adopting to behaviours and lifestyles beneficial to the environment. Expressing serious concern on our almost total dependence on fossil fuel for energy, the Minister commended the efforts of investors and developers in the corporate and tourism sectors for their efforts to introduce alternative sources of energy. He also reminded everyone to do their best to economise and reduce waste not only on energy but other resources for the sake of a safe environment and tackling climate change. This year's World Environment Day theme Kick the Habit reflects the urgency of changing to environment friendly ways of life, Abdullah said.

Minister expressed sincere appreciation to all those who are working for the cause of environment and said these works demonstrate the courageous determination of the friends and partners of the environment. He encouraged them to continue with greater determination their great service in spite of the difficultites and challenges which come in their way.

Ahmed Abdullah pointed out the importance of maintaining a good balance between environment and development emphasising that environmental sustainability is the best guarantee of sustainable investments and businesses.

ދުނިޔޭގެ ތިމާވެށީގެ ދުވަސް ފާހަގަކުރުމުގެގޮތުން ބޭއްވުމަށް ހަމަޖެހިފައިވާ ހާއްސަ ޕްރޮގްރާމްތަކުގެ ތެރޭގައި ހިމެނޭ އުކާލެވޭ ތަކެތިން ތައްޔާރުކޮށްފައިވާ ބޭނުންހިފޭ ތަކެތިގޭ މައުރަޒާއި ޕޯސްޓަރު ކުރެހުމުގެ މުބާރާތް ހުޅުވުމުގެ ރަސްމިއްޔާތު ބޭއްވިއްޖެއެވެ. އޭދަފުށި އިޖްތިމާއީ މަރުކަޒުގައި ބޭއްވުނު ރަސްމިއްޔާތުގައި މިމައުރަޒު ހުޅުވައިދެއްވީ ޝަރަފްވެރި މެހެމާނު މިނިސްޓްރީ އޮފް އެންވަޔަރަންމަންޓް އެނަރޖީ އެންޑް ވޯޓަރ އަލްފާޟީލް އަހުމަދު އަބްދުﷲ އެވެ. މިމައުރަޒުގައި ބައިވެރިވެފައިވަނީ ބ. އަތޮޅުގެ ރަށްރަށުގެ ދަރިވަރުންނެވެ.

ކުނީގެ މައްސަލައަކީ މިހާރު ރާއްޖެއަށް އަދި މުޅި ދުނިޔެއަށްވެސް ވަރަށް ބޮޑު ނުރައްކަލަކާއި ދަތިތަކެއް ކުރިމަތިވެފައިވާ ކަމެކެވެ. ރައްކާތެރި ގޮތެއްގައި ކުނި ނައްތާލުމާއި އުކާލެވޭ ކުނި ދެވަނަފަހަރަށް ބޭނުން ކުރެވޭ ގޮތެއްގައި ބޭނުން ހިފުން ވަރަށް މުހިއްމެވެ. މިހެންކަމުން މިހުޅުވުނު މައުރަޒަކީ ގިނަ ބަޔަކަށް އުކާލެވޭ ކުނިން ބޭނުންހިފޭ ތަކެތި އުފެއްދޭނެ ގޮތައްދައްކާލުމަށާއި މިފަދަ ތަކެތި ތައްޔާރުކުމަށް މީހުން ޝައުގުވެރި ކުރުމަށް ވަރަށް މުހިއްމު މައުރަކަށް ވެގެން ދާނެއެވެ. ދުނިޔެ ހޫނުވެ ކަނޑުގެ ލޮނުގަނޑު އުސްވަމުންދިއުމުގެ ސަބަބުން ރާއްޖެކަހަލަ ފަސްގަނޑު ތިރި ގައުމަކަށް މިކަމުގެ ގެއްލުން ވަރަށް ބޮޑަށް ކުރާނެއެވެ. މިހެންކަމުން ތިމާވެއްޓަށް ގެއްލުންވާ އާދަތަކާ ދުރުވުމަށް އެންމެންވެސް ވަރަށް ބޮޑު ސަމާލުކަމެއްދޭން ޖެހެއެވެ.

މިހުޅުވުނު މައުރަޒުގައި ބައިވެރިވެ ވަނަވަނައަށްދިޔަ ފަރާތްތަކަށް އިނާމާ ހަނދާނީލިޔުން ދެއްވުން އޮންނާނީ ތިމާވެށީގެ ދުވަހުގެ ރަސްމީޖަލްސާގައެވެ. މިއަހަރުގެ ދުނިޔޭގެ ތިމާވެށީގެ ދުވަސް ރަސްމީގޮތުން ފާހަގަކުރުމަށް ހަމަޖެހިފައިވަނީ މާޅޮސްމަޑުލު އުތުރުބުރީ އޭދަފުށީގައެވެ. ދުވަހުގެ ރަސްމީ ޖަލްސާ މާދަމާ ހެނދުނު އޭދަފުށީ އިޖްތިމާއީ މަރުކަޒުގައި ބާއްވާގޮތަށް ވަނީ ހަމަޖެހިފައެވެ.
