A senior official of the Environment Ministry has said that the extensive marine pollution in Meemu Raiymandhoo sea and lagoon could have been caused by algae bloom or spawning of coral which is a process that releases the kind of pollution observed in the area. He said however it is difficult to confirm this without further investigations and research. A team from Environment Research Centre and Marine Research Centre has visited Meemu Raiymandhoo today and observed this area in the Raiymandhoo sea and lagoon covered with extensive marine pollution. People of Guraidhoo in Male' atoll are very concerned and worried about severe land erosion in their island which they say is caused by large scale sand mining in the lagoon of adjoining Kandoomaa resort, Adam Mohamed from the island has reported. Adam said people of Guraidhoo have reported the matter to many authorities but no action has been taken so far to stop the sand mining. " We are very worried about this problem. Our island has suffered severe land erosion because of the sand mining which is taking place very close to our island. We are surprised why such a thing is happening when we have so many serious environmental problems. We have reported to Environment Ministry but they say there are unaware of it, and permission for sand mining is a matter under the Agriculture Ministry. So we are trying to find a way to save our island from this danger"...more
